The Louisiana Legislature is considering a bill that would give the New Orleans City Council more authority over the Sewerage and Water Board.

Rep. Stephanie Hilferty's House Bill 652 would have the agency recognized as a public utility and subjected to regulation by the City Council.

The House Commerce Committee voted Monday to advance the bill to the full House.

New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell, who serves as president of the Sewerage and Water Board, strongly opposes the bill.
