New Orleans Police Chief Shaun Ferguson says the best way to fight the spike in violent crime is with more cops on the streets.

Ferguson says every district officer will work a 12-hour shift starting June 1 in order to make more officers available to patrol and respond to calls.

The department is coping with a manpower shortage, with just over a thousand officers on the force.

The Louisiana State Police will provide troopers to assist the NOPD as they investigate crimes and arrest suspects.
