New Orleans is nearly doubling its budget for police officer recruitment.

The City Council voted unanimously on Thursday to increase the amount it allocates to the New Orleans Police & Justice Foundation to run police recruitment, from $500,000 a year to $900,000.

City Council President Helena Moreno says New Orleans has fewer than 1,000 officers on the force, which should have about 1,400.

A police spokesman claimed the force has more than 1,000, but he didn't say how many.
