A federal judge is fining a Houston-based dredging company a million-dollars for a 2016 oil spill.

Great Lakes Dredge & Dock pleaded guilty a year ago to criminal charges of causing the spill in Bay Long while rebuilding a barrier island east of Grand Isle.

A worker accidentally cut an oil pipeline in an area where Great Lakes wasn't authorized to work, resulting in a spill of 160 barrels of oil.

Great Lakes, the nation's largest dredging company, pleaded guilty to violating the federal Clean Water and Pipeline Safety Acts.
