Organizers of the failed effort to recall New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell are disputing the final official count of signatures on the petition.

Orleans Parish Registrar of Voters Sandra Wilson had a press conference Thursday to explain why so many signatures were tossed out.

A deputy registrar says all the pages submitted in the second batch were duplicates, and a number of the signatures were names of cartoon characters.

Organizers Eileen Carter and Belden Batiste say they submitted 100,000 signatures and sent copies in case anything was lost.

The organizers say they're considering their legal options.
