The state funeral for former President Jimmy Carter will be held on January 9 at Washington National Cathedral. President Joe Biden will deliver a eulogy, honoring Carter's legacy as a "man of principle, faith, and humility."
Flags will fly at half-staff for 30 days following Carter's death, as announced in a proclamation by President Biden.
Carter, who passed away peacefully at his home in Plains, Georgia, on Sunday (December 29), was 100 years old, making him the longest-lived president in U.S. history. Before the state funeral, Carter will lie in repose at the Carter Center in Atlanta on Saturday and Sunday, allowing the public to pay their respects. He will then lie in state at the Capitol in Washington.
After the funeral, Carter will be returned to Georgia for burial next to his wife, Rosalynn Carter, who passed away last year. The couple had expressed their wish to be laid to rest together at their family residence.
Washington National Cathedral has hosted state funerals for several former presidents, including Dwight Eisenhower, Ronald Reagan, Gerald Ford, and George H. W. Bush. The funeral will be part of a week of remembrances honoring Carter's life and contributions.
