A bill sponsored by Louisiana Senator Bill Cassidy is now federal law, and is expected to help Louisiana deal with the fentanyl crisis.

President Donald Trump signed the HALT Fentanyl Act on Wednesday. The law classifies fentanyl-related substances as a Schedule 1 drug.

Anybody arrested by federal drug agents for possession of at least 100 grams of fentanyl will get an automatic ten-year sentence in federal prison.

A 2023 Louisiana law also provides tough sentencing for fentanyl dealers.
