A Chicago man is in hot water after he shot and killed an endangered whooping crane in Evangeline Parish.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries says Michael Alaniz admitted he shot the crane last month on a privately owned crawfish farm.

He was cited on Monday for violating the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, which involves a fine of up to $950 and up to 120 days in jail.

The agency says Alaniz may also owe up to $15,000 in civil restitution for the value of the crane.
