HPOU Blasts Lina Hidalgo "Illogical" Decision To Release 1,000 Criminals

Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo announced yesterday that she would be putting in an order to release around a 1,000 criminals from the Harris County jail.

Over the weekend Gov. Greg Abbott issued an executive order prohibiting the release of anyone accused or convicted of a violent crime. No doubt that if Abbott had not issued that order, Hidalgo would have been pushing for the release of violent felons and accused murderers all in the name of social justice.

Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo said he hasn’t been given the specific of Hidalgo’s plan.

He tells KHOU burglaries of businesses have increased by 18.9 percent in the last two weeks, “let's hope people who burglarize vehicles, residences and buildings aren't released in large numbers.”

HPOU President Joe Gamaldi called Hidalgo’s plan for what it is, “politics at its worst.”He says the county judge is using the Coronavirus crisis “to accomplish her goal of emptying jail".

HPOU further elaborated on Gamaldi’s point, putting out a statement saying:

“The most shameful thing in all of this is, Hidalgo just threatened law abiding individuals and business owners with six months in jail for violating her “stay at home order” but is now releasing 1000 criminals from jail. Apparently, the hypocrisy knows no bounds. As Harris County residents we should be embarrassed at what is occurring, while we all struggle with the enormous impact Covid19 is having on us all. We elect our leaders to lead and to protect us, Hidalgo is doing neither."
