Dorian Reaches Category 5 Intensity Sunday Morning, Max Winds Of 160 MPH

Hurricane Dorian became a "catastrophic" category 5 storm Sunday morning with maximum sustained winds of 160 miles per hour with higher gusts, as the eyewall reached the Abaco Islands.

The National Hurricane Center warned of devastating winds, life-threatening storm surge and heavy rains for the northern Bahamas, as the slow-moving Dorian is expected to stall over the islands, moving little through Tuesday morning.

The system was crawling westward at just 8 miles per hour as of the 7 a.m. update.

The NHC says hurricane-force winds extend up to 30 miles from the center of Dorian and tropical storm force winds can be felt up to 105 miles.

While Florida may be able to avoid a direct landfall from the storm, Dorian is forecast to remain a major (category 3 or higher) hurricane through Wednesday off its east coast.
