A severe weather threat has grown for the New Orleans metro area ahead of a cold front pushing through the area.

Areas on both sides of the Lake lay within an area under a enhanced risk of severe weather, with a slight risk further south of Lake Ponchartrain. While severe impacts may not be widespread, there is a threat of damaging winds, hail and isolated tornadoes.

The highest risk area falls over northeast Louisiana, Mississippi and western Alabama. In those areas, the National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center warns of "Long-track, intense tornadoes are expected along with damaging winds and large hail."

The severe weather threat will lessen west to east into the evening, leaving behind calmer conditions and cooler temperatures on Thursday.
