LSU Legend Billy Cannon Dead At 80

The man many consider to be the greatest athlete in Louisiana State University history is dead. Legendary football player Billy Cannon died in his sleep Sunday at the age of 80.

Cannon became the only Heisman Trophy winner from the school in 1959, combining speed with brute strength to also have an eleven-year pro football career.

The two-way player was drafted number one in 1960 by the Los Angeles Rams of the NFL and the Houston Oilers of the now-defunct AFL, choosing to play for the Oilers.

He quit football, went to the University of Tennessee dental school and became an orthodontist.
