Gulf Of Mexico Dead Zone Expanding

Scientists at LSU are predicting the dead zone in the Gulf of Mexico will be larger than the state of Connecticut by the end of July.

The dead zone will cover over 66 hundred square miles off the coast of Louisiana and Texas.

The northern Gulf dead zone is the second largest human-caused area in the world.  A dead zone is an area with little to no oxygen, which poses a threat to sea life.

Scientists say areas lacking oxygen appear year round, but it is the worst in the spring and summer months.
