The former chief of Fire District 12 in St. Tammany Parish is retiring effective September 1st.
Stephen Krentel's decision was announced via a letter read at the district's Board of Commissioners meeting Thursday night.
His wife was found murdered in their Lacombe-area home last year that had been set on fire to apparently try and cover up her shooting.
Krentel was ruled out as a suspect, but was demoted to chief of operations after allegations of wrongdoing in the department and an alleged affair came to light.
