New Facility Built At Site Of Katrina Drowning Deaths

An assisted living facility is now open in St. Bernard Parish on the same property where 35 elderly nursing home patients died during the levee breaks and floodwaters from Hurricane Katrina.

The Advocate reports the former owners of St. Rita's Nursing Home have partnered with another couple to open The Village at St. Bernard on LA-36 in Violet.

The owners of the nursing home were later acquitted on multiple counts of negligent homicide, saying they didn't realize an order issued to evacuate was mandatory.
