For the third time in four years, some of the bays of the Bonnet Carre Spillway will be opened tomorrow to head off potential downstream flooding from the Mississippi River.
The spillway with more than 300 bays, or floodgates, is located in St. Charles Parish and when activated diverts water from the river into Lake Pontchartrain.
Rainfall during the winter is now flowing southward and puts at risk the ability of levees to hold the water back.
Officials with the Army Corps of Engineers say more than three dozen bays will be open tomorrow.
