Gas, Oil Companies Sued By New Orleans Over Coastal Erosion

New Orleans is the latest to sue a number of gas, oil and pipeline companies for allegedly damaging coastal wetlands and threatening the safety of residents.

Mayor Latoya Cantrell announced the filing of the legal action on Friday. She says the loss of protective barriers will leave New Orleans "a literal coastal city within the next 50 years," with experts saying the coastal land loss could exceed $133 billion in lost capital stock.

Six neighboring parishes filed similar lawsuits earlier.
