Governor Leads Unity Service After Historically Black Church Fires

As an investigation continues into arson fires that destroyed three historically black churches in St. Landry Parish, Governor John Bel Edwards led a unity service yesterday that brought members of the three congregations together.

The Palm Sunday service was held at Little Zion Baptist Church in Opelousas.

Edwards told those gathered that he hoped the "tragedy can be turned into a triumph of faith, hope and love."

Charged with setting the fires over a ten-day period is 21-year-old Holden Matthews, the son of a St. Landry Parish sheriff's deputy.

St. Landry Sheriff Bobby Guidroz said 21-year-old Holden Matthews is the son of St. Landry Parish Deputy Roy Matthews.
