Bill Advances To Ban Holding Cellphone While Driving

The state is closer to upping the ante in its battle against distracted driving as a bill advances in the Louisiana House to ban holding a cellphone while driving.

The measure cleared the chamber's Transportation Committee yesterday.

If and when it wins final approval, the bill, authored by Republican Representative Mike Huval, is expected to punish first-time offenders with community service.

Subsequent violations could draw fines beginning at $200.
