Mandeville Bans Swimming In Lake Pontchartrain Due To Algae

The city of Mandeville is prohibiting swimming in Lake Pontchartrain due to harmful algae blooms on the water.

Officials say they have also closed the St. Tammany Fishing Pier and Northshore Beach because of the toxic algae.

St. Tammany Parish President Pat Brister said the closures will be in effect until further notice.

The algae is described as having an odor of rotting vegetation and is dangerous because exposure can result in rashes, vomiting, and nervous system problems.
