Bill Proposed For Fishermen Reimbursement From Spillway Loss

A new bill may provide hope for local fishermen who have lost out because of the Bonnet Carre Spillway.

Yesterday, senators from Louisiana and Mississippi announced the Commercial Fishing and Aquaculture Protection Act.

It uses a $150 million fund to reimburse fishermen whose gross revenue dipped below 85% of their average revenue over the previous three years.

The bill will make money available for losses incurred this year and every year from now on.

Bill co-sponsor Senator John Kennedy says fishermen deserve the same type of assistance that has been offered to farmers for years.
