New Orleans S&WB Updates Progress On Lafitte Canal Debris Removal

The New Orleans Sewerage and Water Board says it has only been able to remove around two percent of the debris in the Lafitte Canal.

Board Director Ghassan Korban updated the progress yesterday, saying about 950-tons of debris had been removed in the past month, including a car that went missing during Hurricane Katrina.

SW&B engineers estimate that close to 22,000 tons remain in the nearly three-miles of canal with most of what's left being composed of mud and silt.

Korban said his department moved out the largest objects it could find and would need to have more funding to continue cleaning the canal.
