New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell is on her way to Africa to take part in the inaugural Essence Full Circle Festival.
Cantrell left from New Orleans last night for Ghana, the host nation for the festival, which marks the 400th anniversary of the first slave ships leaving Africa to cross the Atlantic Ocean.
Cantrell will speak at the event and work on creating a sister-city agreement between New Orleans and Cape Coast, which is home to over 30 annual festivals and the ancestral family home of former First Lady Michelle Obama.
The trip is expected to last eight days.
