Leaders in major Louisiana cities are praising the response of citizens and law enforcement as weekend protests remained mostly peaceful.
The New Orleans Police Chief sent out a tweet on Saturday thanking demonstrators for exercising their right to free speech with rioting.
Hundreds gathered at the state capitol in Baton Rouge to express anger over George Floyd, an unarmed African-American killed by police in Minnesota.
Floyd was murdered in Minneapolis while in police custody after an officer was filmed with his knee on Floyd's neck for several minutes while he was handcuffed, face down and saying he could not breathe.
Similar protests in Los Angeles, Washington D.C., Minneapolis, Atlanta, and other major cities were marked by looting, arson, and violence.
On Saturday, Gov. John Bel Edwards released a statement condemning the death of Floyd saying that racism and racial inequality has no place in society.
Edwards added that racial inequality has no place in society and that "no one should fear violence or mistreatment because of the color of their skin."
