St. Tammany Animal Shelter To Get New Director

St. Tammany Parish will hire a new director of animal services.

On Wednesday, Parish President Mike Cooper said they are looking for a new animal shelter director after receiving backlash from animal advocates who say the shelter is overcrowded and that animals are not receiving sufficient care.

Cooper said that the director position has been vacant since Monday but did not mention anything about the departure of the former director, Melisa Sullivan.

While the search continues for the next director, Cooper says he signed an agreement with Best Friends Animal Society, an animal welfare group that is going to evaluate the parish shelter.

That evaluation was delayed by the COVID-19 shutdown but will take place in early July.
