State House Rejects Bill Limiting Qualified Immunity For Police

The Louisiana House is rejecting a bill that would have limited the ability for police officers to claim immunity from abuse allegations.

The bill was defeated in committee by a vote of 9-7 with two Republicans joining five Democrats voting in favor of the measure.

The bill was sponsored by Representative Edmond Jordan and aimed to push for reforming a practice that protects bad actors from being held accountable for illegal activity.

The practice of qualified immunity protects government officials from civil lawsuits in all cases except where clearly established rights have been violated.
