Black-Led Charter Schools Declare Juneteenth A Holiday

Beginning today, more than a dozen New Orleans charter school organizations led by African Americans will now recognize Juneteenth as an official holiday.

School leaders issued a statement yesterday saying that their collaborative goal in recognizing the day is for it to serve as a reminder of "the importance of black history, events, and culture."

Officials added they hoped to serve as a catalyst, encouraging the official holiday for all schools in New Orleans in the future.

The charters' announcement comes days after the New Orleans Saints and Pelicans announced those teams would also recognize the holiday.
