Lusher Charter School Considers Changing Confederate History

A school in the city is trying to change its Confederate history.

On Wednesday, Lusher Charter School's top official said she will begin the process of considering a name change for one of the city's most in-demand public schools.

The campus currently memorializes Robert Mills Lusher, a Confederate figure and former Louisiana schools superintendent who fought desegregation and stated that he believed in "the supremacy of the Caucasian race."

The announcement by CEO Kathy Riedlinger comes as thousands of students, parents, teachers and alumni have urged school administrators to find a new school name that is more inclusive of all students.
