A Jefferson Parish judge has ruled that Sean Barrette is not mentally competent to stand trial for murder.
On Wednesday, Judge Scott Schlegel ruled that Barrette lacked the mental capacity to understand the legal proceedings after a 20-minute sanity hearing held via video conference.
According to court documents, the 23-year-old Metairie man is accused of killing three men while randomly firing on vehicles during a two-week shooting spree in Jefferson and Orleans parishes last year.
The ballistics evidence also ties Barrette to the shooting death of a 61-year-old man in New Orleans East last year as well.
He has pleaded not guilty all charges against him, including two counts of first-degree murder.
Barrette will now be sent to the Eastern Louisiana Mental Health System for treatment and will be reevaluated in February.
