Ban On Natural Hair Discrimination To Be Considered By NOLA City Council

A measure banning discrimination against hair styles is headed to City Council.

Activists appeared before a City Council committee Tuesday and requested that members approve a local version of what's know as the CROWN Act.

The ordinance, which was passed by the U.S. House in September, serves mainly to protect Black people against workplace dress codes that deem their natural hair unprofessional.

If approved by the full council, New Orleans would become one of only a few cities in the country to adopt a local version of the measure.

CROWN Acts are in place in California, New York, New Jersey, Virginia, Colorado, Washington and Maryland.
