State lawmakers are refusing a bill that would prohibit transgender athletes from competing on girls' sports teams in schools.
The House Education Committee rejected the bill Tuesday 6-5. Despite the rejection, a similar proposal awaits debate on the Senate floor.
Supporters of the proposals say they are trying to protect female athletes from unfair competition.
