New Orleans ambulances will be the first ones in the region to carry blood for emergency transfusions for injured patients.
Dr. Emily Nichols, medical director for New Orleans Emergency Medical Services, says there were 80 or 90 patients who could have benefited from available blood supplies over the past year.
The ambulance fleet is working with the Blood Center on the program, which starts next Monday.
A number of paramedics have already been trained on when and how to transfuse the blood.
