Louisiana has a shortage of doctors and nurses and it could be getting worse.

The shortage was a serious problem before the pandemic put a strain on the state's health care system.

Dr. Jennifer Manning, associate dean for undergraduate programs in LSU Health New Orleans School of Nursing, says she's been a nurse for 21 years and there's always been a shortage, but it's never been worse.

Dr. Richard DiCarlo, senior associate dean in the LSU Health New Orleans School of Medicine, says the state needs more primary care doctors, but med school is expensive, and primary care doesn't pay as well as specialty positions.
