Mitch Landrieu is President Joe Biden's pick to implement the administration's trillion-dollar infrastructure plan.
The White House on Sunday announced its choice of the 61-year-old former lieutenant governor of Louisiana and former New Orleans mayor.
Landrieu will oversee the upgrade of roads, bridges, ports, and airports.
The White House insists the plan will create millions of well-paid jobs.
Landrieu was elected mayor of New Orleans in 2010 and helped the city with the ongoing recovery from Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
