New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell is addressing severe staff shortages at the city's public safety departments, saying the city has lost 11% of its workforce since the pandemic started.

The police department has 270 vacancies, EMS has 28 positions to fill, and the city needs 26 mechanics to work on the fleet of emergency vehicles.

Cantrell and Chief Administrative Officer Gilbert Montaño are proposing a plan with a $15 million one-time price tag.

The plan considers bonuses for new and current city employees.
