Only five of the 13 outdoor pools in New Orleans will be open this summer because of a lifeguard shortage.
A spokesman for the New Orleans Recreation Development Commission says it's a problem in cities across the nation.
He says partly it's a matter of the ongoing recovery from the pandemic, but they recently increased the pay for lifeguards from $12 an hour to nearly $16.
The city's indoor pools are open year-round, and will be open all summer long.
