Carbon monoxide detectors will now be required in Louisiana homes.
Governor John Bel Edwards signed a law on Tuesday that requires carbon monoxide detectors in all one- or two-family homes sold or leased in the state.
The law also requires a carbon monoxide detector in any home that has a generator installed.
State Rep. Stephanie Hilferty authored the bill after Hurricane Ida when people with whole-house generators had close calls with carbon monoxide in their homes.
The law takes effect on January 1.
