A campaign to fight distracted driving in school zones got underway on Monday and continues through this week.
The campaign is a joint effort of the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission, Destination Zero Deaths, and local police agencies.
A Louisiana State Police spokesman says state law already bans texting while driving on any public road or highway.
Anybody caught texting in an active school zone could be fined $500 for a first offense. Repeat offenders risk losing their driver's license for 60 days.
