A local criminologist says New Orleans should mount a nationwide search for a new police chief.

Ashraf Esmail of Dillard University says Mayor Latoya Cantrell shouldn't be in too big a hurry to replace Shaun Ferguson, who announced his retirement on Tuesday.

Esmail says the ongoing wave of violent crime has residents feeling unsafe, so the city should cast a wide net in its search for a new police chief.

He says the nationwide search could include the possibility of hiring from within.
