The Louisiana legislature is advancing a bill that would give a life sentence for possession of 28 grams or more of fentanyl.

The Administration of Criminal Justice Committee passed the bill on Tuesday by a vote of 12-1.

Rep. John Stefanski, the author of the bill, says fentanyl is the leading killer of people between the ages of 18 and 45.

The Crowley Republican says the bill targets suppliers instead of users.

The same committee gave only three votes of support to a bill to legalize marijuana in Louisiana.
