Jefferson Parish officials are posting signs urging residents not to give cash to homeless panhandlers.
State Sen. Patrick Connick of Marrero says the signs are placed in areas where panhandling is common.
The signs encourage drivers to donate to charities such as Unity of Greater New Orleans instead.
Sen. Connick says giving money directly to the homeless "feeds addiction."
Connick says the Jefferson Parish Human Services Authority spends millions of dollars to help with things like health care and other programs for the homeless.
