The Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry is using aircraft to monitor potential wildfires.
Commissioner Mike Strain says they once used more than 100 fire towers statewide.
The department now has eight aircraft flying grids at the time of day when fires are most likely to start.
The planes spot fires before they get out of control, and they help state crews respond more quickly.
Strain says the planes determine whether they're looking at a trash pile, a controlled burn, or a wildfire.
