A Louisiana lawmaker is raising the alarm after Gov. John Bel Edwards commuted the sentences of dozens of convicted murderers.

The 56 latest commutations included 40 for first or second-degree murder convictions.

State Representative Laurie Schlegel posted Tuesday on social media that the inmates had been sentenced to life without parole.

The Metairie Republican points out that when Edwards granted them clemency, they became eligible for parole.

Schlegel says three of the them had already been released as of Tuesday.
