St. Tammany Parish President Mike Cooper issued a state of emergency Wednesday after severe weather moved through the area, leaving behind numerous reports of damages and injuries.

"The weather is gone, but this is going to be a multiple day event. It will take a few days to fully restore power. It will take several weeks and perhaps months to restore normalcy for all," Cooper said in a post on Facebook.

Slidell Mayor Greg Cromer told our partners at FOX 8/WVUE-TV, "We haven’t seen this much damage since Hurricane Katrina."

Parish officials say shelters have opened at Creekside Junior High in Pearl River and the Recreation Center in Lacombe.
