A recall petition is now filed against St. Tammany Parish Coroner Dr. Christopher Tape.
The Louisiana Secretary of State's office accepted the recall petition on Tuesday.
Organizers have 180 days to collect just over 35,000 signatures from registered voters in the parish in order to trigger a recall election.
In February, it came to light that Tape had faced charges of child sexual assault that were ultimately dropped in New Mexico.
Tape maintains his innocence.
