A new state law forbids anybody at a crime scene who's not involved to come within 25 feet of an officer who's lawfully conducting his duty.

Gov. Jeff Landry signed the bill into law on Tuesday.

The bill's author, Rep. Bryan Fontenot, a Republican from Thibodaux, says it's intended to keep both officers and the public safe, adding similar laws are being considered nationwide.

Former Democratic Gov. John Bel Edwards vetoed the bill.
