The Ponchatoula Police Department is confirming heart failure as the cause of death of an on-duty officer on Tuesday.

Police chief Bry Layrisson says 44-year-old Corporal Pricilla Dean Pierson was found unresponsive inside her police car in the parking lot of a Rouses supermarket around 10 a.m. Pierson was pronounced dead at the scene.

Layrisson announced Wednesday that an autopsy revealed undiagnosed heart disease, including arterial blockages.

Pierson's husband is a captain with the Ponchatoula Police Department.

Layrisson has also set up a GoFundMe fundraiser for Pierson's family.

A memorial for Pierson was held by the Ponchatoula Police Department on Thursday and a funeral is scheduled for Saturday.
