Louisiana leaders are responding to President Joe Biden's withdrawal from the 2024 presidential race.
Democratic Congressman Troy Carter spoke of Biden's "unparalleled commitment to our nation." Louisiana Public Service Commissioner Davante Lewis praised Biden's work on climate change.
U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson says the Democrats nullified the votes of 14 million primary voters by forcing Biden off the ticket. U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy says the decision was overdue because of Biden's "declining" mental capacity.
Gov. Jeff Landry says Trump is running to correct Biden's mistakes.
Former U.S. Rep. Cedric Richmond of New Orleans, a co-chair of the Biden campaign, says the withdrawal from the race on Sunday took him by surprise.
Richmond had stated on national TV just a few hours earlier that Biden planned to stay in the race for the Democratic Party's nomination. He later said that the decision from Biden put the good of the country ahead of himself.
Former New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu, another co-chair of Biden's reelection campaign, called Biden's move a "selfless act of courage."
