The Jefferson Parish public school district is starting the new school year with about 140 teacher vacancies.
School officials say the vacancies are spread over the district's 75 schools, averaging fewer than two per campus.
Last year the district was reportedly short about five or six teachers per school.
After closing down several schools last year, the district gave teachers a $2,500 pay increase.
With 50,000 students, the Jefferson Parish school district is the largest in Louisiana.
