A federal investigation says the pilot of a tow boat was asleep when the vessel hit a pier upriver from New Orleans last year.

The National Transportation Safety Board concluded its probe on Wednesday.

The NTSB says the pilot of the boat named John 3:16 fell asleep on the job while navigating the Mississippi River near St. Rose last September. The investigation found that the pilot had slept less than five hours in the two days before the accident.

Repairs to the boat and the pier cost more than $285,000.
